Get clued up on concealer

Inline Image

An ace concealer disguises blemishes, brightens shadowy areas and, teamed with foundation, delivers a smoother skin tone. On the flip side, the wrong shade or formula is practically asking everyone to notice your skin gripes. Here’s the what, where and how for the next time you apply.

Blemishes
“Apply concealer after foundation using a fluffy eyeshadow brush, concentrating on the centre of the blemish,” says SJ Froom, BareMinerals make-up artist.

Redness
“Use yellow to minimise redness. Use a flat-headed brush to tackle precise areas — around the nose — and a kabuki brush for larger surfaces.”

Under-eyedark circles
Hydrate with an eye cream and use concealer in a shade lighter than your foundation. Apply in an upside-down triangle. Set with translucent powder to stop creasing.

Pigmentation
Use cream concealer instead of heavy foundation. Apply with a brush, then use fingers to blend thoroughly around the edges.

This week: up your brow game

In one simple feathery motion, it can all go awry: too thick, too strong, too dark. Smashbox Brow Tech Gloss Stick (£16.50) is your new weapon for defined brows. Here’s why.

1 It’s so soft. In fact, a few light sweeps delivered my most natural drawn-on brows yet. You have to press extra-hard to look overdone.

2 Don’t be afraid of the word gloss. I agree, glossy brows sound strange, but actually the shiny finish helps to keep them in place and highlights the texture of the hairs.

3 Use the nifty brush Don’t forget it. Brush brow hairs up and out, then fill in the sparse areas.

And one tip Avoid filling in the inner brow too heavily, as it creates a perma-angry expression.
